Returning home from Desert Storm, now divorced, I returned home to an empty house. As I surveyed my situation—a dismal bank account and seemingly bottomless financial hole—a sense of lonely desperation swept over me. I found myself mentally and financially bankrupt. Newly divorced, I had no job, no help, and no hope. My reasons to live were gone.

From the moment I set foot in the door my phone rang non-stop, day and night, with creditors demanding money that I didn’t have. I would tell them, as my mother used to say, “You can’t squeeze blood from a turnip.” These were the same creditors who had promised a period of forgiveness for those of us who served. When I told them I had come home to no job, no money and no means to pay, they continued to threaten, becoming angrier, more belligerent, and ruder with each call. Basically, they behaved as if I was the scum of the earth. I felt, and still feel to this day, that these people enjoyed harassing others.

I immediately began to pound the streets looking for work. I needed anything to get me out of the house each morning before the creditors started hounding me again. I knew that even if I managed to find something, and get hired right away, it would still be a few weeks before my first paycheck arrived. I could ignore the constant harassing phone calls, but food, utilities, and gasoline were a must. Between job applications and interviews I visited the unemployment office, desperate for any source of income. Then I spent the next couple of weeks stretching every penny as I waited for that first benefit check to arrive. A sense of overwhelming relief flooded over me when I opened my mailbox and found the envelope I had been waiting for. I eagerly tore it open, only to find a letter denying my application. There would be no checks. Before I read the letter, I could never have imagined a level of anger, frustration, and disappointment so heartbreakingly powerful. It had taken a great deal of energy to ask for that help, but here I was, a military service member who had just served during a time of war, asking for a little help, and I had been denied.

It had been all I could do during those past few weeks to wake up every day and push aside the financial stresses and a sense of depression and unworthiness. I tried desperately to get back to that person I had once been, that person I knew in my heart I still could be. I’d forced a smile onto my face and gone out looking for work. Now, standing there with that letter in hand, I felt as though I had sunk to that spot below the sludge at the bottom of the barrel. My life didn’t seem worth living. I was twenty-four, and the goals I had set at seventeen now seemed impossible. I wasn’t even sure how I would survive that day, let alone the next.

Falling back on the beliefs of having Dreams and working towards them. It didn’t happen overnight but by setting goals, both short term and long term adjusting as needed, learning from others who have succeeded and were living the life I imagined myself to live, with dedication, drive and desire, I can now say I am one of those people living their dream and inspire others to work towards theirs.

I went from that financially and mentally bankrupt soul to financially independent, living my dreams and sailing and traveling the world in a matter of 10 years.2

At the lowest point in my life, I fell back on simple truths from my childhood: hard work gets results, and it’s okay to dream. And dream I did, setting goals that launched me from poverty to a life I could not have imagined. You can do it, too.

The truth is that one day I had to face a situation where I had just broken up with my partner at the time, left my son to live with him as a temporary solution as I had no job, no place to live and no money. Finally, I managed to register myself as unemployed and get the little financial support from the government while looking for a new job. The money I got was enough to pay for the room I was renting from my friend's mother. But the fact was that I had to pay all that money for my rent and had no money for food or anything else. At the time I got involved in a volunteer project and walked to town to work on that for hours. That kept my mental state sane and focused. But I went days after days for just drinking water and no food. I was seriously starving.

My friend's mother was working in the publishing company at the time and brought home all kinds of interesting books. One of these books I found talked about how we create abundance and money with our thoughts. That was a shocking moment for me to finally realize that I myself had created the situation with not enough money and had to also take responsibility for that part.

In no time I pulled in an opportunity to get a scholarship for 6 month's studies in a Danish Folk High School. I had never been away from home for that long, but I was so broken on every level that I felt that would probably be a good reset for my whole life and the timing could not have been better. That really worked. As it was a sports Folk High School, we ate only healthy food and the whole schedule of the school was very disciplined so it completely changed me and my life and habits!

After Denmark I arrived back to Estonia and looked again for secretary job as this was what I was trained for. 5 months later I realized that I am not really happy doing that job and as I had a dream to move to Norway then as soon as I set that thought out there, I moved to Norway and actually lived, worked and studied there for 7 full years.

I also traveled to South Africa to study there as well to make my documentary there and thereafter move back to Estonia for 4 years to set up my business New Flow. Because of all the hardships and challenges I had abroad - settling back to Estonia was super easy. In 2008 I had the first year when my company made 100 000 dollars in revenue! I could not believe it!

I could not almost believe it! Obviously, we are what we think and as I had changed my thoughts from lack consciousness into holistic abundance - my reality changed drastically as well.
